The rate at which some counties have been misappropriating billions of shillings through wastage and incomplete projects is alarming.

According to the auditor-general, some of the projects did not start while others stalled at the early stages despite getting financial allocations.

Some 12 counties are also said to have failed to account for Sh81 billion that they received from the National Treasury.

The level of impunity exhibited by these errant counties is shocking to say the least.

The country needs to roll out measures that will entrench accountability among public servants.

Kenyans have been yearning for an end to the endemic corruption that has spread its tentacles across the country.

The National Audit Office always releases reports on spending by public entities, but it seems that no action is ever taken to punish those who violate the law,

Public servants responsible for reckless spending of taxpayers money should not only be surcharged but should also be jailed.

That is the only way this negative culture can be eradicated.
